I pressed a button

… and with that, a mother watched the life of her son slip away finally and forever.

I see death happen in front of me all the time. But since December 13, 2012, I have been affected as never before by witnessing other moms watch their children die. The anguished, “no no no no” that always comes out strangled, and the reluctance to leave the their child’s body, to walk away from that marvelous creation that gave them so much joy and purpose, that made them a mother.

Our pain is different, but mostly, it is the same. We are mothers who touched our dead children. We are suddenly part of the same dreadful, nasty club.
