closed for business

Yesterday my mom/full-time babysitter came in to tell me that she thinks we should take a baby sibling of Jo Jo’s if/when her birth mom has another, and if it happens to be born in our state. I was like, say WHAT?!? And my response is no, just no.

It’s not that I would never want to foster/adopt again, I may or I may not. If I did, I would certainly want it to be one of Jo Jo’s siblings. But did I mention I’m going to grad school, guys? Yeah, I am working towards becoming a nurse practitioner. Not only for a pay increase and lifestyle upgrade, but for working hours that will fit with Jo Jo’s schedule once she is in school all week. I don’t want to work in the evenings or weekends when that’s the only time she’s available. I’d much rather work while she’s in school, and not miss out on dinners/homework/plays/sports, etc. I also want to be a role model for her, and pursue the highest degree of academic achievement that I am interested in. I want to show her that you can always aim as high as you can dream.

So, for the next few years at the very least, this foster home will be closed for business. Fostering is a full-time job, not to mention one that is full to the brink with heartache and anxiety. Parenting one child can be overwhelming at times, let alone two children, one of whom is an infant and in “the system”. Jo Jo may even end up as an only child (with several beloved pet family members) and that would be ok with me, too.

So mom, I appreciate the vote of confidence but… the answer is no!

  1. I had to laugh when I read this. About a month ago, my DH asked when we would be doing another transfer, and informed me that if we did it then, the baby would be just about a year apart in age with Dex……….. Um, no.
