foster license: revoked

I was quite surprised when I got home last night to find a letter from the foster care agency requesting that I return my foster care license immediately in the provided envelope. The supervisor is requiring it, not the licenser.

I felt almost a little insulted. I know that I was previously only licensed for one child, but is it an automatic that once I adopt my license is revoked??? I mean, I wasn’t planning to foster right now, but what about Moose? What if he goes back into care? What if one of M’s siblings goes into care? Wouldn’t I at least be able to have the option to consider it? And what about providing respite, is that not allowed either?

Maybe I’m overreacting and have no reason to feel insulted. I agree that my house is too small for a family of more than two. I wouldn’t take a placement right now anyway, for many reasons. I would only consider taking Moose, as I have a rapport with his whole family.

This is just weird.

  1. Very weird. And your caseworker never mentioned at any point in M’s case, like during TPR, that your home would be closed once she was adopted? It seems someone should have mentioned it way ahead of time. I would think they would put you on the no-call list, but it’s weird that they would demand back a silly piece of paper.

  2. Some agencies require a “rest” period after an adoption of, typically, around 6 months. I can’t believe they wouldn’t tell you that ahead of time though! I too would be very frustrated and demanding to know why…even if you’re not going to take kids!
